The great thing about living in a city like Wellington is that you can be in the middle of the countryside within about half an hour. Today, we jumped on the bus round to Eastbourne, which is on the other side of the harbour. There are plenty of walking tracks overs there, and a work colleague had recommended a walk to butterfly creek.
Like many walks around Wellington, it was pretty hilly. The ascent lead to lovely views back over Wellington and the harbour, and we could even see across to the mountain ranges of the South Island. To get to the picnic spot, we basically had to walk back down the other side of the hill that we'd just walked up. As we made our way down towards butterfly creek, it felt like we were walking into another world. We found ourselves in the middle of thick native bushland, that felt a million miles away from the city.
The weather was gorgeous, and the picnic area was in a lovely little sunny spot. Hard to believe that it's the middle of winter here! Once we'd had our lunch and walked back up and over to Eastbourne, we stopped for a well deserved coffee and cake in great cafe overlooking the water.
