Snowboarding

This weekend, we both took Friday afternoon off work and headed up to Ohakune to go snowboarding. Our friends organised a 'bach' (a self catered house) for us and six other friends. We'd not met any of the others before, but we all got on brilliantly. We had a few beers and lots of laughs on Friday evening, and then all got up bright and early to hit the snow on Saturday. After Simon had prepared us all a hearty bacon and egg sarnie for breakfast, everyone managed to get themselves ready and out of the door by 9am, which is quite impressive for a group of 10.

We didn't really know what to expect of the snow, as lots of people had told us that its not as good as in Europe, and that there hadn't been much new snow etc, but it was brilliant! The only thing that was really odd was that it's a single mountain (volcano, actually), rather than part of a mountain range like you get in France. That meant that we were standing on a slope covered in snow, looking across hundreds of kilometers of green fields. The only other mountain we could see was Mount Taranaki in the far distance (which is where we went boarding for the day last month).

We had a great day on the slopes, then went to a pub in town for Apres beers. Emma and Pip made us an amazing spag bol to come home to, which was much appreciated by all.

The weather wasn't very good the next day and the visability on the mountain was poor, so we gave it a miss and headed home on Sunday after brunch. Great weekend, looking forward to next time!
