The festive season here in Wellington was always going to be strange for us, but it's been enjoyable. A few things have been similar to home- we've had work Christmas nights out and 'secret santas', and all the usual mince pies and chocolates making an appearance.
The main difference is obviously that the season is back to front! It's not just that it's warmer (supposedly), but it's odd that the evenings are so light. This means that there are very few Christmas lights, either in the street or in people's homes. It does mean that the Kiwis adopt a summer flower, the PÅhotukawa as their 'Christmas Tree'. They are absolutely everywhere an really pretty, so a fairly good substitute for tinsel and lights I suppose!
Other things have just been plain weird. We watched a 'Christmas Parade' in Wellington, was was bizarre- it seemed to have nothing at all to do with Christmas, but loads of kids seemed to enjoy it, so that's what counts I suppose!
