J&V Down Under: Milford Sounds

We spent the day yesterday driving from Wanaka to Milford Sounds, which was really enjoyable. It's a long way, but plenty of things to stop and look at along the way. Probably one of the most impressive things was driving through Homer tunnel, which is a 1.2 km tunnel through an enormous rock, built in 1954.

We were staying right down in Milford Sounds, so went for a walk and a quick beer in the sunshine when we got there. The following day we went on a boat trip around the Sounds (or more correctly Fiord, as dad pointed out in their blog when they visited) I think the thing that I've learnt about New Zealand countryside is that it's almost impossible to describe the sheer scale of things, and photos really don't do it justice- huge lakes, massive mountains, giant waterfalls. Milford sounds is no exception. I've tried to include photos with other boats in to give an idea of the scale of these rocks and waterfalls. The weather was a bit misty, as is often the case in Fiordlands, but this just added to the atmosphere.

It was a really enjoyable trip, and when we'd finished we jumped back in the car and headed to our next destination, Queenstown.
