Bone Carving

When we were in Barrytown doing the knifemaking, we met a couple who suggested that we go to a bone carving workshop while we were in Nelson. It sounds a bit gross, but we really enjoyed it. It was run by a German hippy with an interest in Maori culture, and he's been doing the workshops for the last 10 years.

You start off by sketching a design, then draw it on to a lump of cow bone. Then there's lots of drilling, carving, shaping and sanding to produce the finished piece. It was really satisfying and makes a lovely memento of our time in NZ.


The following day we finished off our trip round the South Island with a few pints in a pub built in an old church. Fab!
